New Year, New Faces, New Season(s)

Welcome back!!!

Excitement is building as the 2015 indoor and outdoor seasons approach.  Schedules and plans are being finalized as the days count down.  Both the indoor and outdoor schedules, as they currently are, have been posted to the website - www.sjatrackandfield.blogspot.com.  There will certainly be revisions, but it is a good starting point for those of you making plans ahead of time.

New this year is an overnight trip during the indoor season to Ohio State on Feb 6-7.  We will only be taking a limited crowd based on entry restrictions, so show up and show out if you want to make that trip.  There will be some extra cost to cover hotel $ as this is not currently in the budget.

During outdoors we will again be hosting the Jaguar Invite at Fairview HS.  It falls on the day before Easter, which is unfortunate, but goes with the territory of spring sports.  We will be looking for help from parent volunteers to help at field events, the finish line, entrance, and t-shirts.  The sooner you know you can help, please speak up!

Starting with indoors, individual weekly schedules will be posted.  Please note specific event people may have changes according to their event coach - know your plan!!  Ignorance and lack of paying attention are not excuses - ask Johnny Manziel!  haha

Indoor practices will generally meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays unless the weather or school schedule dictates otherwise.

Indoor (and outdoor to some extent) meets can be time-consuming. Bring your homework and perhaps set it up with parents/friends to get a ride home at the conclusion of your event.  For INDOOR we do not enforce a policy where everyone has to stay for every event - as a matter of fact we try to schedule on the early events so we can head home sooner.

Outdoor practices meet every day and even on holidays/vacation days except St. Patrick's Day.

For all practices indoors and out all athletes need to have proper gear - we will try to practice outside if its at all reasonable (or even slightly unreasonable)!

Happy New Year!

What a season!

The track and field season, which started with so much potential and curiosity (and snow) has finally come to a successful conclusion (but technically its not over yet, more on that later).  This past weekend saw the most successful season in school history come to a climax as 3 more school records were set, 2 events reached the podium, and fuel for next year's fire has already been poured.  It needs to be said that if you are one of the top 8 in girls Division I in Ohio, it means you are one of the best in the entire nation - Ohio is that good!

To cap off an amazing season, Jenea Adams reset her own 100m dash and 200m dash records, reached the finals in the 100, and finished 8th overall.  Not only is Jenea the first Jaguar sprinter to qualify to the state meet in an open sprint, she is obviously the first sprinter to earn "All-Ohio" status with her 8th place finish.  After 2 previous years of disappointing runs in the 4 x 200 in Columbus, this year was different.  Led off by Adams, carried by third year qualifiers Gab Leon and Becca Sedlak, and boosted by first year speedster Lauren Zawie, the relay finally qualified to the finals, broke a very fast school record, and also achieved "All-Ohio" status with their 8th place finish.

Junior thrower Brittany Morrison was just one of a few throwers to qualify in both the shot put and discus.  While neither event went according to plan, it is an event dominated by seniors so she will be back.

Senior Alesha Vovk, qualifying to the state meet in the 1600 seemingly out of nowhere, finished her race in 15th place.  To revisit the comment above about the season not being quite over, Alesha has been invited to compete in the prestigious Midwest Meet of Champions in which the best seniors from Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana square off.  She will be competing next weekend!

To wrap it up, below is a list of important events and firsts in this year's season.  Indeed it has been a remarkable season - the best in SJA history ever!
* 8 school records were set (actually more considering the 100 broken 3 times)...100m, 200m, 100H, PV, shot put, 4 x 100, 4 x 200, sprint medley.
* the most events ever qualified to the state meet (6)
* the first qualifiers to the state meet ever in 100m, 200m, and shot put
* the first "All-Ohio" athletes in the 100m and 4 x 200
* the 3rd consecutive district team title
* the 1st ever regional title (only 2nd sport in SJA history to do this!)

The post-season rolls on!

After an amazing District Championship, the Jaguars rolled some more at the Amherst Regional meet.  The team scored 55 points for a 4 point victory over Perrysburg and the rest of the teams.  SJA scored points in 12 different events (out of 17 possible events).  A school record 6 events will be competed at Ohio State's track next weekend including Junior Brittany Morrison in the shot put and discus throws, junior Jenea Adams in the 100 and 200m dashes, the 4 x 200m relay team of Adams, Lauren Zawie, Gab Leon, and Becca Sedlak, and senior Alesha Vovk in the 1600m run.

dual with Magnificat information

The itinerary was slow to post...sorry - its been crazy.  The kids have seen it all along.

We need help running events tonight, whether its putting up the high jump bar, pole vault bar, measuring in shot put or long jump, or timing at the finish line.  This is the last meet we need to host, so please help!!!

thanks!

Bus leaves SJA after school.  The bus will NOT be staying, so all rides need to be picked up at St. Eds.  Because this is the big dual of the season athletes are asked to stay the whole meet to cheer for their teammates!  Dress warmly!!!

Hello all!

First things first - ALL OF YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR FINAL FORMS BEFORE FRIDAY.  Mr. Carras (the AD) said he will pull people off the team if you are not up-to-date on final forms.  The directions are linked on the website.

Thank you to everyone who helped put on the meet this past Saturday.  It means a lot to us as a program and school to do a good job.  I was VERY impressed and pleased with our team's effort in helping us run a good meet.  The hurdles were moved so quickly and efficiently no one could believe it!  GREAT WORK!

Monday, April 7 - expect rain!!  Normal day

Tuesday, April 8 - 58 girls to Elms dual meet, the rest stays at SJA for practice (tentative itinerary posted on the team website)

Wednesday, April 9 - normal practice

Thursday, April 10 - normal practice

Friday, April 11 - normal practice (pre-meet)

Saturday, April 12 - split squad - varsity at Nordonia Relays, JV at Bedford

Week of March 31

Please do your Final Forms!!!

This is a BIG week for us.  We WILL have our first meet on Tuesday (for everybody).  We will then HOST our own invitational this Saturday.  You are required to be there even if you are not competing.  When hosting a meet a lot of help is needed along the way.  Last year was our first time doing it and we pulled it off well, but this year there are more teams so it means more work.

Also WE NEED PARENTS TO VOLUNTEER.  Timers, field events, and everything else in between need to be appropriately covered.  Help is not hired for such things.  Please tell your parents we need help and for them to email me.  The time frame for field events will be about 8:15-12:15.  Timers for running events from 9:45 to 1:00pm.

Continue to dress properly for every single day, especially Saturday!

Tuesday's meet will be at VASJ.  The itinerary will be posted before practice on Tuesday (hopefully late Sunday night).

Monday 3/31 - full team meeting first, then practice.  PVers to Lakewood at 4:30.  You have sprint practice first.

Tuesday 4/1 - meet at VASJ....First bus leaves before school gets out.  Who is on it will be announced Monday.  Second bus after school.  Get ready quickly!

Wednesday 4/2 - early dismissal (2pm).  Your event coach will inform you of your practice.  Sprinters will be allowed to start without coaches, but we will finish together.  Expect to be done by 4:00.

Thursday 4/3 - normal workout day

Friday 4/4 - normal workout day

Saturday 4/5 - 2nd annual Jaguar Invitational!

Sunday 4/6 - cross train on own

Thursday, March 27, 2014

Brecksville meet cancelled

We will NOT be competing Saturday at Brecksville.  The current forecast is 35 degrees and rain/snow mix.

Practice will go on as scheduled Friday, but there will not be practice Saturday.

Tuesday's meet has become a meet for EVERYONE, not just JV.

Sprinters - bring spikes for Friday - we may need them and Coach Williams hopes to work on some long jump.

thanks and sorry - mother nature wins again!

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Saturday's meet

The itinerary for Brecksville's meet (and all future itineraries) will be posted under the tab at the top of this page called "2014 schedule".

Contact Coach Kieser if there is a mistake regarding the events you are doing.

Don't forget to do your Final Forms online paperwork!

Expectations for 2014 Outdoor track and field

Hi all!!!

Welcome to 2014 Track and Field!

We pride ourselves on having an all-inclusive program where everybody gets to compete.  At the same time, we want to have an elite program that can run, throw, hurdle, and jump with the best in Ohio.  We are the 2x defending district champions - a feat that is very hard to do.  Winning #3 will be even tougher, but we can do it!

To be part of this team you have to consider the following...
1.  You have to have an up-to-date physical.
2.  You have to come to practice.
3.  You have to communicate with your coaches.
4.  You have to want to improve, whether you are varsity or JV.
5.  You have to have a good attitude.
6.  Check this website and your email regularly!

Don’t limit yourself...great teams require great effort from the last to the first.  The more depth we have at every event the better off we will be for this year and down the road.

If you know someone who is strong, fast, or athletic – encourage them to join!

This week - January 27, 2014

Hi all,

The plan this week for sprinters is to workout as normal...Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday...expect to be done around 4:45 this week instead of the typical 4:30.

Distance runners - until the super cold is gone and the sidewalks are run-able, I cannot really prescribe days to run.  If you have access to treadmills at home or at a club, then go for it.  There are many things you can do to build your fitness.  You can set strong inclines, you can do 1 minute pick ups at a faster pace, you can do tempo runs, and you can do intervals (not so easy).  You can also go to a hill outside, do some sprints in the snow-covered grass, or just run through the bike path and get your heart rate up quickly slogging out some miles.  Remember that anything is better than nothing, but something planned is better than anything.  I'll be sending a note to the team soon to talk about motivation, goals, and pushing yourselves.

Thank you all for enduring with the long day on Saturday.  That is about as long as any track meet I've been to.  They are usually much better run than that.

Throwers be sure to check with coach for what your schedule is.

thanks!  Coach Kieser

week of Jan 20

Hi all,

It looks like the next couple of weeks will be a test for all of us in more ways than just the EOCs.  We are in for a big cold snap.  Combine that with some goofy school schedules and it makes for a tough go for indoor track.

I only ask that you do the best you can.  Be disciplined in your studies and training, budget your time wisely, and try to remember your goals – both academic and athletic.  Success later depends upon paying a price now.  Whether that is skipping “friend time” to study extra or finding a treadmill to run on during a 15 degree day – sacrifice is sacrifice in the name of doing something great.

With that said here is this week’s plan.

Monday 29 degrees and some snow…no school but YES PRACTICE.  I hope you can make it!  Sprinters 11:00am-1:00pm, high jump 12:30pm-1:30, distance 1:30-3:00.

Tuesday 13 degrees – no scheduled practice

Wednesday 15 degrees – early dismissal – captain led practice done by 3:30.

Thursday 17 degrees – EOC schedule – practice 12:30-2:00pm

Friday 22 degrees – EOC schedule no practice

Saturday 27 degrees – meet at YSU (events to be posted soon)…bus leaves 7:30am

Thanks!!  Coach Kieser

Week of Jan 13, 2016

2 big things to pay attention to this week...

1.  Based on weather, this week's best days for practice are Mon, Tues, and Thurs.  If you have a conflict on Tuesday just let me know please.  Please have appropriate clothing for outside.  We will likely stay inside Thursday, but you never know...:-)

2.  I have posted a tentative itinerary for the Youngstown State Meet on January 25.  It is under the page titled "Indoor 2014 schedule"...click on "tentative itinerary".

Please check to make sure you can go and that you are listed in an event.  I have to submit these online very soon, so the more accurate we can be the better.

DO NOT SAY YOU'RE GOING TO THE MEET THEN NOT SHOW UP!!!  THAT IS A BIG NO-NO!

Have a great rest of your Sunday and finish up Quarter 2 strongly!

thanks, Coach Kieser

Week of Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Hi SJA Indoor Track and Field Team!!!

AS I wrote before break, I will post our workout days before school starts - I should have sent this out sooner than 7:15PM on Tuesday though.

Here is the plan, and it can only apply to those who have their physicals up-to-date...that list I sent out before xmas break, but will repost below.  The date of your schedule is when you last had it and it is good for one year.  If it is out of date, get it updated ASAP!  You had all xmas break and 2 bonus days to do it!  thanks!

For this week, since we didn't have school on Monday or Tuesday (and I'm still holding hope on Wed), we WILL PRACTICE Wed, Thurs, and Fri.

Wed is early dismissal and home bball game, so we have to work fast.
Gab will lead sprinters through a warm-up session in the gym for the full team including distance and sprinters.  After the warm-up throwers go to weight room to lift, sprinters and distance go to stairwell.
Sprinters run fast to top of stairwell then walk back down on outside edge.
Distance/MD run fast to top of stairwell then jog to other end of 3rd floor hallway, down the steps to basement, and jog along basement hallway back to original stairwell.
All distance and sprinters do 10 min of core when done.
Should be done by about 3:15

Thursday, Jan 8
MD and distance and throwers to be determined
Sprinters with Coach Kieser 3:15-4:30

Friday, Jan 9
MD and distance and throwers to be determined
Sprinters with Coach Kieser 3:15-4:30
