Final Post - tying up loose ends

Regionals has come and gone, but unfortunately that is the last track and field meet for the SJA team. Our best finish was the 4 x 800 team in 6th place - two spots out of qualifying for the state meet. The group ran a season's best of 9:39, but it wasn't quite enough. Also earning a spot on the podium at regionals were Rachel Borowski with a season's best 2:20.02 (7th place) and Kristin Karn with an 8th place finish in the 3200.

With the banquet behind us that leaves just 2 items of importance to tackle.

1. GET YOUR UNIFORMS TURNED IN IMMEDIATELY! Please put them in a plastic bag with your name in it or on it.

2. The spring informational cross country meeting will be held Wednesday during 1st activity block in room 331.

Check out the sister site for cross country at www.sjaxc.blogspot.com

Thanks for a great season and be sure to check back occassionally for updates and information regarding next year.

Day 1 results

We had a good day 1 at districts with many PR's and regional qualifiers already in hand (top 4 in each event).

Starting the day off for SJA was the high jump, where Jaguars got 2nd (Jordan Daugherty) and 4th (Katelyn Seroka). Shortly afterwards the 4 x 800 team of Kristin Karn (2:22), Kelly Gallagher (2:27), Gabby Kreuz (2:29), and Rachel Borowski (2:26) earned a second place finish with a solid 9:45. Last but not least was the shot put in which Sam Sulzer earned a second straight trip to regionals with a 2nd place finish (32'5").

The running events saw some PR's including Julie Delong in the 200 (28.2), Gabby Kreuz in the 400 (61.1 - #2 all-time SJA and finals qualifier), Erin Gaffney in the 800 semis (2:28.9) and Bride Sweeney in the 300H with 52.74. The 4 x 200 also qualified to the finals running a season's best of 1:50. The 4 x 400 made finals as well with a time of 4:13.

After the first day of competition, the Jags find themselves in first place with 27 points. 1 point ahead of Medina Highland and 7 points ahead of Revere.

On a cold rainy afternoon, several members of the JV squad traveled to Woodridge for the 2nd annual "stars of track and field meet".

Coveted t-shirts were awarded to the top 4 athletes in each event, in which SJA athletes earned a total of 9. Also, Maureen Bole was named "Star Thrower" of the meet for her first place PR in the discus (meet record) of 93'6.5" and her 5th place throw in the shot put.

Besides Bole, shirt winners were: Leah Cwynar, Rachel Caja, and Marie McNamara (all tied for 2nd in the high jump with 4' 4"), Erin Gaffney for her first place PR in the 800, Jordan Daugherty for her 2nd place PR in the 800, Taylor Whisler with a 2nd place PR in the 3200m run, Indie Munday with her lettering standard PR in the shot put (2nd place), and Taylor Miller with her 4th place effort in the shot.

Eastlake North Results

This weekend the varsity squad participated at the prestigious Eastlake North Ranger Relays. We finished 7th out of 16 teams. Complete results can be found at www.baumspage.com under "Achilles Ranger Relays" and our team's individual results/splits can be found on the link in our schedule to the right.

Among the highlights include a stirring come-from-behind victory in the 4 x 1600 Friday night when Kristin Karn made up 25 meters in the last leg to win by .2 over Solon. The team also consisted of Melissa Bresnahan, Kenzie Bova, and Kelly Gallagher.

Second place finishes were also brought home in two field events. The pole vault relay of Alexis Lees and Angelina Chuppa jumped to a silver medal Friday night. The discus relay team of Samantha Sulzer and Amy Palguta both set season's bests to easily outdistance third place.

Today at the chilly and windy Medina Relays, the discus relay team of seniors Amy Palguta, Sam Suzler, and Angelina Chuppa combined to throw 299' 9", beat the old record by exactly 1". Additionally this relay placed first at Medina, helping SJA to a 7th place finish out of 19 teams.

SJA v Mags follow-up

While the first SJA v Mags dual meet was an exciting event, the SJA side went hope disappointed with a poor showing. Magnificat won the varsity meet by 30 points, and it wasn't even that close. On the bright side the SJA JV squad pulled out the 4 x 400 to clinch their end of the meet with a close 3-point victory.

For the varsity, the throwers stepped up as they have so many times in recent past sweeping both the shot and disc for both the varsity and JV. Sam Sulzer won the varsity shot, while Amy Palguta won the varsity discus. Maria Papotto won the JV discus and Maureen Bole won the JV shot.

Other winners for the varsity were: Alexis Lees in the pole vault, Jordan Daugherty in the high jump (PR 5' 1"), Anne Marie O'Toole in the 300H, and the 4 x 200m relay.

For the JV, winners included: Anna Hanigosky in the long jump, Elizabeth Wagner in the 100H, the 4 x 800m relay (Volk, E. Gaffney, Seroka, C. Gallagher), Erin Gaffney in the 400, Mary Volke in the 800, and the 4 x 400 (Volk, E. Gaffney, Seroka, Russo).

Midpark Dual meet results

Team Score....SJA 82-Midpark 43 (we win!!) The score will be incorrectly reported to the Plain Dealer (if its reported at all).

Overall, despite it being the first meet for many and chilly for all, I thoroughly enjoyed watching everyone compete. Hopefully you enjoyed it as well. Now that we all have a mark in the books, its time to focus on getting better the rest of the season. Some of you will continue to search for your best events, while some of you are looking forward to sharpening your skills for the post-season. Either way, we all work together!!!

Congrats to our event winners: Sam Sulzer (shot put), Jordan Daugherty (HJ), Alexis Lees (PV), Kenzie Bova, Kristin Karn, Colleen Gallagher, Melissa Bresnahan (4 x 800), Bridget Urban (100H), Rachel Borowski, Kelly Gallagher, Daugherty, Molly Lehane (4 x 200), Kelly Gallagher (400), Anne Marie O'Toole (300H), Whisler (3200) and Borowski, K. Boardman dual meet results

Today was the season opener, and while we were greeted with blue skies and sun it was still chilly out. Unfortunately the sun may have been the only bright spot of the day as out of 17 events we only took one first place. We'll shake the rust off over the next few weeks as the weather gets better.

Upcoming News/Reminders

Ladies, please keep the following things in mind.

1. You need to get your paperwork in to your coach who will give it to me. If you have not received the papers yet, Mrs. Garlock will take care of that with a meeting the first day back to school. Listen to announcement for more info.

2. Team pictures are Tuesday, April 1st...this is not an April Fool's joke. Uniforms have been passed out during the spring break week. We will most likely run out, so sharing will be necessary. Forms for picture day are on the bulletin board in the athletics hallway.

3. The first meet is this Saturday for mostly varsity. The JV people will be competing next Wednesday at either Avon or St. Ed's.

4. Keep your grades up! You cannot compete if you're ineligible!

5. The money for sweatpants and sweatshirt ordering is due Tuesday (picture day). This is the last day you can order. Scroll down the posts to see what you can get. The cost is $18.00 for the sweatshirt and $17.00 for the pants. Checks can be made to SJA.

TENTATIVE Boardman Line-up

Below is the planned events for Boardman. This is subject to major change, especially with the throws, jumps, and sprints. We will be bringing up JV sprinters to fill gaps.

First Practice!

The time has finally arrived!

The first official track practice will be this Monday after school for the WHOLE TEAM! We will begin by meeting in the gym, introducing coaches, passing out schedules, etc...From there we will split up into our respective groups. If you're not sure who you should go with, ask me after the meeting and we'll get you taken care of.

Please bring the following everyday:
Workout clothes: proper shoes, shorts, socks, and shirt.
Outdoor clothes: Most coaches will have you outside whenever its reasonable, so when temps are in the upper 30's/lower 40's expect to go outside. Hat, gloves, exercise pants, and layers for the upper body.
Lock! Bring a lock and share lockers with a friend. There are thieves among us at the Academy, so keep your valuables in a safe place.
A friend...bring a friend who isn't quite sure if she wants to do it or not. There's only one way to find out!
A positive attitude and an attitude that supports a culture of success.

See you Monday! Coach Kieser
