Regionals in the books - next up states!

The track and field season enjoyed one of their best performances ever at the OHSAA Amherst regional tournament last Friday when 3 school records were set, 7 different events scored points, and the 4 x 200m relay team qualified for the second year in a row to the state meet.  The Jaguars showed great balance across the various disciplines by scoring in a throwing event, jumping event, sprint event, hurdle event, and distance event.

The relay team of MaryKate Caja ('13), Becca Sedlak ('14), Gab Leon ('14), and Brenna McGrath ('13) took the 4th and final qualifying spot with a school record time of 1:43.19 in the 4 x 200m relay.  Sedlak later came back to finish 7th and set a school record in the 400m dash with a time of 59.24 seconds.  Not to be outdone, freshman hurdler Ky Williams finished 7th in the 100 meter hurdles and broke one of the oldest school records on the books with a time of 15.80 seconds.

The 4 girls in the state qualifying relay will run at Ohio State's Jesse Owens stadium on Friday June 7th in the semifinals with the goal of reaching the finals on Saturday.
Go Jags!

This week - a note to all!

hi team!

It has been a fun 48 hours since the announcement of the 2nd consecutive district championship.  If you weren't there please see our blog for a picture and the details.  I may have been a district record for the largest number of points ever scored with 194!  We had athletes in 16 out of 17 events qualify and 8 district champions!  Some have a legit shot at qualifying to the state meet, but it will take some great focus and effort this week at Amherst.  I couldn't be more proud of this group!

The itinerary for Wed and Fri is posted on the website - please see it.  Those of you will have to reset your goals, and really believe in them.  For some it is making finals.  For others it is qualifying for state.  And yet others simply PRing and competing to the best of your ability on your biggest stage is what you need to look at.  We are at a new battlefront where the competition will be significantly better.   Round one was getting to district finals, round 2 was qualifying to regionals, round 3 of this battle is qualifying to regional finals.

I am still looking for uniforms from many of you.  Please wash them and bring them in.

If you are done competing for the season please consider running in the Earn Your Spots 5k Monday morning at SJA at 9am.

Tuesday during second AB there will be an informational cross country meeting.  Please spread the word and make sure you're there!

Schedule for the week:
Monday - May 27
Sprinters and Vovk - 3:00-4:30 practice.  Have your spikes

Tuesday - May 28
Sprinters - done by 4:30 as we do pre-meet day

Wednesday - Regionals...dismissed 2:15, bus leaves 2:30.  All must ride bus - no individual driving

Thursday - May 30 - pre-meet - done by 4:30

Friday - May 31 Regionals...dismissed 2:30, bus leaves 2:45.  Again please ride the bus!

Back to Back!

In resounding fashion, the SJA track and field team defended their OHSAA district title this past weekend over 2nd place Lakewood and 3rd place Magnificat at Lakewood High School.  The point total of 194 was far in advance of Lakewood's 115.

Regardless if it was Wednesday's exceptionally warm weather or Friday's chilly and blustery conditions the Jaguars showed up ready to compete.  All the disciplines contributed to the win, which included wins in 8 different events.  Event winners include; sophomore Brittany Morrison in both the shot put and discus, freshman Ky Williams in both the high jump and 100m hurdles, junior Rachel McGuire in both the 1600 and 800m runs, senior MaryKate Caja in the 300m hurdles, senior Brenna McGrath in the LJ, and the 4 x 200m relay team of Caja, junior Becca Sedlak, junior Gab Leon, and McGrath.

Many more qualified to next week's Amherst Regional by placing in the top 4 in her event.  Other than the winners listed above, the following will also compete next week; McGrath in the 200m dash (4th), freshman Monica Hahn in the 100m (2nd) and 300m hurdles (4th), freshman Bridget McGuire in the pole vault (2nd), junior Nicole Rave in the discus (2nd), Ann Conroy in shot put (4th), senior Jill Bresnahan in the 3200m run (3rd), Sedlak in the 400m dash (3rd), senior Helen Steve in the 1600m run (4th), senior Emilee Armbruster in the 800m run (4th), junior Alesha Vovk in the high jump (2nd), the 4 x 100m relay team (2nd) of junior Mackenzie Dorin, sophomore Sarah Stottner, Leon, and sophomore Jenea Adams, the 4 x 400m relay team (2nd) of McGrath, junior Maddie Zimmerman, Armbruster, and Sedlak, the 4 x 800m relay team (2nd) of Rachel McGuire, freshman Anna Farris, Zimmerman and Armbruster.

Day 1 of Districts

In what Coach Kieser often refers to as the "more important day of districts", the Jaguar track and field team set a solid tone after the first day of competition.  Other than 3 finals, the majority of the day is spent trying to qualify to Friday's finals.  If you don't have a good first day, you can't have a good second day.  Overall, SJA qualified all but 3 people to Friday's finals.  Currently the Jags are in the lead with 41 points, but most of the points are still to be had on Friday.

For the 3 finals that already happened, SJA nearly maxed out their possible points.  Also, all those competitors made it to next week's regional meet at Amherst by finishing in the top 4.  The day began with the Jaguar high jumpers pulling off the rare 1st and 2nd sweep.  Freshman Ky Williams took home first place with a jump of 5' 1", while junior Alesha Vovk finished right behind with a jump of 5' 0".  The 4 x 800m relay team of Rachel McGuire ('14), Anna Farris ('15), Maddie Zimmerman ('14), and Emilee Armbruster ('13) took 2nd place.  Soon after that, an exciting shot put competition saw sophomore thrower Brittany Morrison  win with a big throw of 36' 8.5" and senior Ann Conroy sneak from 5th to the coveted 4th spot on her last throw with a final toss of 32' 5.5".

Qualifiers to Friday's finals include:
Ky Williams and Monica Hahn in the 100H
Jenea Adams in the 100m dash
the 4 x 200m relay team of MaryKate Caja, Becca Sedlak, Gab Leon, and Brenna McGrath
the 4 x 100m relay team of Mackenzie Dorin, Sarah Stottner, Leon and Adams
Becca Sedlak in the 400m dash
Caja and Hahn in the 300H
Rachel McGuire and Emilee Armbruster in the 800m run
McGrath in the 200m dash
the 4 x 400m relay team of McGrath, Zimmerman, McGuire and Sedlak

Also competing Friday will be
McGrath and Sarah Reardon in the long jump
Morrison and Nicole Rave in the discus
Bridget McGuire and Alexis Bloor in the pole vault
Rachel McGuire and Helen Steve in the 1600m run
Emily Bauer and Jill Bresnahan in the 3200m run

This week - week of Monday May 20th, 2013

Hi all!

This is an exciting week for many, and a time for our athletes to showcase the results of all their hard work this winter and spring.  There are a lot of preparations to be made, but at this point they are mostly mental/technical and not so much physical (the hay is in the barn, as they say).

This is a week where we need full cooperation from athletes and parents to make sure we maximize our team's performance.

The district line up has been posted, but we could still change things by Tuesday night (we don't expect to, but we have to be flexible).  An alternate has been listed in every event just in case.  So many things can happen this week with weather, illnesses, and other unknowns, so it is best to err on the side of caution.

Most of you will be done early each day this week, so please don't rush practices.  Take your time, stretch well, and be attentive to all the details.

Monday: seniors are expected to come to practice even with the day off.  Sleep in, eat right, no mistakes!
sprinters - hand-offs workout after a 1 lapper at 90% to put some fatigue in the legs.  1 lapper in flats, relays in spikes.  1 lapper in flats to end workout also.  Light lift
Hahn and Williams - 5 x 3 hurdles from blocks.
Reardon, Vovk - jump rope session and light lift after warm-up
High jumpers to St. Eds from 4:15-5:00pm
Long jumpers with Coach Garlock after workout.

Tuesday: (SPRING SPORTS BANQUET NIGHT)
Team meeting in gym for full DISTRICT team (and alts) before practice.  Short and sweet to make sure we're all on same page.
Pre-meet hand-offs, blocks, etc...

Wednesday: districts at Lakewood - see itinerary on website

Thursday: light workout, team t-shirt making and dinner after??? To be determined!

Friday: districts at Lakewood - see itinerary on website

Saturday and Sunday:
distance runners run as Coach Meeson prescribes
sprinters should cross train, stretch, do abs and push-ups.

All-Catholic final tune-up for the post-season

As most local schools prepare for the post-season with a conference or league meet, the Jaguar track and field team went to VASJ for an unscored end-of-season competition among Catholic Schools.  Team scores weren't kept, but the Jags had finishers in the top 3 of most events.
The Jags lone victory came from senior MaryKate Caja in the 300 hurdles.
Second place finishes were earned by; Junior Rachel McGuire in the 800m run, the 4 x 200m relay of Caja, Audrianna Farris ('15), Maria Coreno ('15), and Brenna McGrath ('13), the 4 x 100m relay team of Mackenzie Dorin ('14), Sarah Stottner ('15), Gab Leon ('14), and Jenea Adams ('15), and Alesha Vovk in the high jump.
Third places finishes came from; Adams in the 100m dash, Emilee Armbruster ('13) in the 800m run, the 4 x 400m relay of Maddie Zimmerman ('14), Dorin, Farris, and McGuire, Bridget McGuire ('16) in the pole vault, Ky Williams ('16) in 100H and high jump, Nicole Rave in the discus.
Next for the track and field team is the district championship this coming Wednesday and Friday at Lakewood High School.  Field events begin at 4pm and running at 5pm Wed, 6pm Friday.

SJA track and field runs into heavy competition

On Friday of last week the varsity track and field team faced its toughest competition of the year at the Berea Relays.  The Jaguars finished a respectable 5th in a field of 15 teams behind powerhouses Medina, Brunswick, Amherst, and North Royalton.  The Jags didn't pull home any victories, but 4 x 200 meter relay team of MaryKate Caja ('13), Becca Sedlak ('14), Gab Leon ('14), and Brenna McGrath ('13) did manage a second place finish.  A couple of third places were earned as well in the shuttle hurdles (Caja, Bridget Roche '15, Monica Hahn '16, Ky Williams '16), and the Distance Medley Relay (Zimmerman '14, Emilee Armbruster '13, Alesha Vovk '14, Rachel McGuire '14).

On Saturday, the JV team took on some varsity competition at the Cleveland Central Catholic Ironman Invitational.  Overall, the team took second behind Trinity's varsity squad.  Complete results of individual results were not announced at the meet, so proper recognition will have to be saved for later.

The team next competes this Friday at Westlake Relays for a mostly varsity squad and the Olmsted Falls Relays for a mostly JV squad.

SJA defeats Gilmour

The track and field team traveled to Gilmour Academy on Monday and had an exceptional day winning a majority of the events and defeating the host Lancers by a large margin (the score was not available at press time).  Gilmour, a perennial track power at the Div III level, did not have a match for the depth of the Jaguars as we swept the top 3 positions in many of the events.

Among the event winners:
4 x 800m relay team of Rachel McGuire ('14), Alesha Vovk ('14), Emilee Armbruster ('13) and Emily Bauer ('13)
100 meter hurdles: Ky Williams ('16)
100m dash: Jenea Adams ('15)
4 x 200m relay team of: MaryKate Caja ('13), Maria Coreno ('15), Gab Leon ('14), Brenna McGrath ('13)
4 x 100m relay team of: Mackenzie Dorin ('13), Sarah Stottner ('15), Leon, and Adams
400m dash: Armbruster
300 meter hurdles: Monica Hahn ('16)
200m dash: K. Williams
4 x 400m relay team of: Adams, Sammi Williams ('16), Coreno, Bridget McGuire ('16)
Shot Put and Discus: Brittany Morrison ('15)
Pole Vault: B. McGuire

This week - April 29th!

first note - if you're name is NOT on Gilmour list of events or there is a mistake please inform Coach Kieser ASAP

Hi ladies.  There is a LOT going on in all your lives, but as a member of the track and field teams we hope you remember your commitment to doing your best for that as well.  On Friday there is Paws for Pride.  If you are competing at Berea on that day, we request kindly you do NOT participate in events that can get you injured, eat smart - meaning pack something for lunch that is stomach-friendly (and pack a second meal for later).  Hydrate!  We are loading up our events to actually try to win that day, which is something we don't typically aim to do.  It is great competition, but you need to be tested before districts.

Also, the spring sports banquet is in May and the form is loaded on our website.  Please print it out, fill it in, and give it to the AD (NOT to the track coaches)

We have 3 weeks for JV and just 4-6 more for varsity.  FOCUS!

This week:
Monday - meet at Gilmour.  Any field event, 4 x 800, or 100H or 100m dash runner should be on the early bus.  The rest of the events should stay in school to the end and load up quickly.  The meet begins at 4:15, so you will have plenty of time.  Do NOT try to stow away on the first bus if you do not belong...Coach Garlock will be watching!!!

Tuesday - practice at SJA...possible PV and/or HJ work.  To be announced.  Recovery work and some specialty work for sprinters.  Weights!!!!

Wednesday - practice at SJA.  Sprinters will be working out on the grass soccer field behind the school.

Thursday - practice at SJA.  same as Tuesday.

Friday - varsity meet at Berea Relays.  JV - please warm-up on your own after school for your pre-meet activities.  Posted on website.  Need a sub in the 3200 for Bauer.  We are taking volunteers.

Saturday - JV meet at Cleve Central Catholic.

Sunday - nothing scheduled, but open discus ring practice likely.

Lakewood Wrap Up

On Friday night the Jaguar track and field team finished 3rd at the Lakewood Ranger Relays.  With a squad tired from Wednesday's dual meet and somewhat short-handed, the Jaguars still had many performances worth building on.
There were 3 first place finishes for SJA on Friday.  Junior Gab Leon dominated the 100m dash with a top ten all-time performance of 12.8 seconds.
The long jump relay of Brenna McGrath ('13), Sarah Reardon ('15), and Olivia Terry ('13) were the top relay as was the shuttle hurdle relay team of Monica Hahn ('16), Bea Ridmann ('13), Ky Williams ('16), and MaryKate Caja ('16).
The next competition for the track and field team will be this Friday when the JV squad heads to Trinity's Invitational at Bedford High School.  Two days later the full squad travels to Gilmour for a dual meet with the Lancers.

Pictures that will help you!!!!

John Mulgrew has taken many excellent pictures from a few meets.  I have looked at many of the Mags meet pictures and think you should all look at them for technique sake.

Field events and hurdles especially, please look at all the pictures of not just yourself, but of your teammates.  Teach yourself what is good and not good and try to remember for the next time.

Hurdlers, you're all still too high over the hurdle.

Long Jumpers, many of you look at the board at take off and more of you put your legs down too soon.  You should not be looking at the sand while you're trying to take off!  Head up!

Throwers - follow through and finish!

Sprinters - come out of the blocks with more power.

Distance runners - don't cross your arms and get your eyes on the shoulders of the person in front of you.

High Jump - arch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the website and passwords:

click on "saint joseph Academy" then type in "sjasports" and "GoJaguars"

You and your parents may purchase these pictures from Mr. Mulgrew.  You can contact him through his website.

Week of April 15th

Hi all...its late-breaking, but the pole vault for SJA v. Mags will be Monday at 5pm at St. Eds.  Pay attention to weather forecasts and be dressed properly for all occasions.  Sprinters should always have spikes just in case and everyone should have hats, gloves, and extra clothes especially for meets.  We had some girls completely under-dressed at Saturday's meet due to lack of preparation.  Lets learn from this and move forward.

Monday:
Sprinters have workout and lifting - done by 5:00
Pole vault at St. Eds for the dual meet.  Farris, Bloor, B. McGuire are varsity - the rest JV.

Tuesday:
team meeting first to pass out awards from last 2 meets and preview dual meet
Sprinters:  typical pre-meet day of hand-offs, starting blocks, long jump pop-ups, first hurdles, etc...done by 5pm

Wednesday: any parents able to volunteer in any capacity it would be greatly appreciated even though technically Magnificat is the host school this year (we alternate hosting).
Meet at Lutheran West at 4:15 for field events, 4:30/4:45 for running events.  First bus leaves at 3:15, then comes back to pick up the rest.  See itinerary for who is doing what.  We have separate varsity and JV squads both competing simultaneously.  You have stay JV or varsity for all your events - we can't move you back and forth.  Please let me know if you were accidently left off the list or if you're not in the right events!  We want to do well in this meet, but more importantly we want you to represent your school, program, family to the best of your ability!

Thursday:
recovery day: sprinters done by 4:30

Friday:
varsity at Lakewood Ranger Relays.  See itinerary for events.

Saturday and Sunday:  no planned workouts but you should work out on your own, especially JV who will not be organized for practice on Friday.

Go Jags!

Victory at Bedford!

The track and field Jaguars won the Bedford Kimberly Relays for the first time ever on Saturday.  Using a unique line up and great depth, SJA won the title in true team fashion.  Many varsity athletes only did one or two events when they often do 2 or 3, and some girls even drove out to the meet after taking the ACT in teh morning!  Out of 17 events, the Jags won 9 of them in all disciplines including; jumps, throws, sprints, and distance.

The 9 winners of their events were;
high jump relay: Ky Williams '16, Bridget Roche '15, Dana Sirchen '14
shot put relay: Nicole Rave '14, Brittany Morrison '15, Molly McAfee '15
pole vault relay: Bridget McGuire '16, Alexis Bloor '15, Sarah Reardon '15
3200m run: Emily Bauer '13
800m run: Brenna McGrath '13

The Woodridge "Stars" meet will be Monday, May 13, NOT May 20.

Austintown Optimist is May 4, the day after Berea NOT May 11 - it does not appear we'll go to Austintown.  Please fix your personal calendars accordingly!

First meet success!

The Track and Field team started the 2013 season where they left off last spring, with a win.  Following up the 2012 season-ending district championship was not going to be easy against the Brecksville Bees, who won this dual meet last year, but a nice combination of old and new faces brought enough balance and depth to score an 82-54 win.

The Jaguars won 12 of 17 events including:
Shot Put - sophomore Brittany Morrison
Discus - junior Nicole Rave
Pole Vault - freshman Bridget McGuire
4 x 800m relay - Brenna McGrath ('13), Becca Sedlak ('14), Emilee Armbruster ('13), Helen Steve ('13)
100 hurdles - senior MaryKate Caja
100m dash - sophomore Janea Adams
1600m run - junior Rachel McGuire
4 x 100m relay - Destiny Evans ('15), Sarah Stottner ('15), Gab Leon ('14), Janea Adams ('15)
300 hurdles - senior MaryKate Caja
200m dash - senior Brenna McGrath
3200m run - Jess Bresnahan
4 x 400m relay - Anna Farris ('15), Gab Leon ('14), Rachel McGuire ('14), Emilee Armbruster ('13)

There were plenty of outstanding performances for the winners listed above and for the entire team as well.  This year there are 91 girls on the roster, and all will help in the push for achieving greater things.

Pictures and results to be posted soon.

Next meet Wednesday, 4:30pm at Avon Lake High School with Medina boys also.

Happy Easter and Go Jags!

Meet Change!!!

Attention all Jaguars - our meet for this weekend has been changed from Akron on Saturday to Kent State on Sunday.  This was necessary because the Akron meet was already filled.  This will be better for us as a team, because the Kent meet takes more athletes from each school.

Check the itinerary under "indoors" to see what events you're in and to make sure you weren't left off.  Please inform Coach Kieser by Monday if there is a conflict!

thanks!
